Nicknamed Israel's "Startup Village", Yokneam Illit looks out over the Jezreel Valley from the northern tip of the Menashe hills, at the foot of the Carmel, 21 km from Haifa, 80 km from Tel Aviv and 5 km from Kiryat Tivon. The transit camp set up in 1950 above the Yokneam moshava (1935) brought together families from Iran, Iraq, Kurdistan, Romania, Yemen and India, later joined by immigrants from North Africa, Ethiopia and the former Soviet Union, and finally by arrivals from Western Europe and the Americas drawn by the tech industry; a city since 2006, it is known for the easy coexistence of secular and observant households. Route 722, in the stream bed, separates the residential quarters from the industrial parks; the Ein Tut interchange links Route 70 with Highway 6. By train, alight at Yokneam-Kfar Yehoshua on the Valley line, 3 km away, then take the local bus; a taxi rank waits at the mall by the eastern entrance. Thirteen kilometres of cycle paths connect the parks, handy for an appointment on a fine day.
