Sakhnin spreads over three hills inside a valley of the Lower Galilee, ringed by peaks that reach about 600 m, roughly 23 km east of Acre, south of Karmiel and north-east of Shefa-Amr. This Arab locality, mostly Muslim with a long-established Christian community, became a city in 1995, and olive and fig groves still cover the surrounding slopes. Drivers reach it along Route 805, the road that runs through the Sakhnin valley from Route 85 (the Acre-Karmiel road); regional buses serve the same corridor. The historic core, around the shrine of Nabi a-Sadiq and the old family quarters laid out by compass point, is a maze of narrow lanes, so leave the car at the edge of the centre and walk the last stretch, especially around school dismissal time.
