The Jezreel Valley's road and rail junction is Afula. Routes 60, 65 and 71 meet here, and the Valley Railway between Haifa and Beit Shean, reopened in 2016, has a stop a short walk from the centre. Established in 1925 by an American Zionist land company, the town grew as a market and service hub for the surrounding kibbutzim and moshavim, which is why locals call it the capital of the valley. It falls into two parts: the lower town around the central bus station and the main shopping street, and Afula Illit on the slopes of Givat HaMoreh. Newcomers from the former Soviet Union and Ethiopia settled here alongside older families. Practical tip: if you come by train, the centre is walkable; by car, park near the bus station rather than hunting for a space on the main street.
