Seven hills at the gateway to the Galilee earned Shefa-Amr its nickname of "Little Rome". The town is 13 km from the Mediterranean and about 20 km from each of Haifa, Acre and Nazareth, where many locals work. It is a mixed Arab city: a Muslim majority, a large Christian community (mainly Greek Catholic) and a Druze community share an old town where the fortress built by Daher al-Omar in 1760, today a community centre, stands beside the old synagogue, the churches and the main mosque. The southern al-Burj quarter takes its name from a Crusader tower. Access is by Route 79 (the Haifa-Nazareth road) or Route 70. Mind the gradients: streets in the historic centre are steep and tight, so it is easier to park lower down and walk up.
