An ophthalmologist (often simply called an eye doctor) is a medical doctor who diagnoses and treats eye diseases, prescribes medication and performs surgery. An optometrist tests your vision and prescribes glasses or contact lenses but does not treat disease. An optician makes and sells the equipment. For loss of vision, eye pain, persistent redness or a diabetes check-up, you need the medical eye specialist.

Not for a private consultation: you can book directly, without going through your family doctor. Within your health fund (kupat holim), a referral from your primary doctor is often required to see a specialist, and waiting times can be long. Many patients use a private visit for a fast first opinion and then continue follow-up through their fund.

Fees depend on the practitioner, the city and the tests done during the visit (fundus exam, eye pressure, imaging). Sudden loss of vision, even partial, a dark curtain, sudden flashes of light with a shower of floaters, severe eye pain with a red eye and nausea, or any eye injury are emergencies: go to a hospital emergency room (miyun) with an ophthalmology department rather than waiting for an appointment. Mild discomfort, slowly declining vision or dry eyes can wait for a regular booking.
