A psychologist is a mental health professional trained in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of psychological and emotional disorders. They use evidence-based psychotherapy techniques to help patients understand and modify their behaviors, thoughts, and emotions. Psychologists often work collaboratively with other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive care.
Verify a bachelor's degree in psychology (typically 3 years) followed by a master's degree in clinical or health psychology (typically 2 years). In the UK and Europe, check for registration with professional bodies (e.g., HCPC in UK, national psychology boards). In Israel, psychologists must hold a master's degree in clinical psychology from an accredited university and be licensed by the Israeli Ministry of Health (Israeli Psychologists License Board).
What the profession can do
What it cannot treat
Psychiatrist
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medications and treat severe mental disorders. A psychologist is not a medical doctor and primarily uses psychotherapy. They often work together for optimal care.
Psychotherapist
The title 'psychotherapist' is less regulated than 'psychologist' in many countries. A psychologist is a qualified psychotherapist, but not all psychotherapists are psychologists. Always verify credentials and training.
Counselor
Counselors provide support and advice but typically have less extensive formal training than psychologists. Psychologists undergo 5+ years of university education and can diagnose mental health conditions.
Psychiatric Nurse
Psychiatric nurses are trained healthcare professionals who support and manage patients with mental health conditions, often in hospital settings. Psychologists provide specialized assessment and therapy.
Psychologist: the listed practitioner consults in Tel Aviv only. Each city has its own page listing the practitioners who work there.
The listed practitioner declares: Hebrew, English, French. Details are shown on each profile.
A psychologist holds a university degree in psychology and, in Israel, must be registered with the Ministry of Health; a clinical psychologist has additional hospital specialisation. They offer psychotherapy and assessments but do not prescribe medication. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor and prescribes. "Psychotherapist" and "therapist" are not protected titles in Israel: ask about training and registration before starting.
Anxiety, persistent stress, low mood, grief, separation, couple or family difficulties, sleep problems, low self-confidence, burnout, adjustment difficulties after aliyah, trauma, or simply the need to talk to someone neutral. For children and teenagers: fears, school difficulties, behavioural problems, assessments (IQ, attention). If suicidal thoughts are present, contact a doctor or ERAN (1201) first.
Privately, no: booking is direct and confidential. Within the kupat holim, psychology consultations are covered in mental health centres, usually without a referral, but with long waiting lists and a limited number of sessions.
The fee for a session (usually fifty minutes) depends on the practitioner, the city, their experience and the type of session (individual, couple, family, video). On RofeBeClick prices are shown on each profile before you book, with no service fee. Some psychologists offer reduced rates for students or new immigrants.
The health funds' supplementary plans (Clalit Mushlam, Maccabi Zahav, Meuhedet Adif, Leumit Zahav) often reimburse part of a limited number of sessions per year with a registered psychologist, sometimes after a referral. Some private and expatriate insurance plans reimburse too. Check your contract before starting and keep receipts.
In therapy, speaking your mother tongue is often decisive. On RofeBeClick, spoken languages and consultation mode (clinic, video) are shown on every profile; the psychology page is broken down by city and the search can filter by language. Video therapy also lets you see a practitioner in another city.
The most common are cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT, well documented for anxiety, phobias, depression and insomnia), psychodynamic therapies, EMDR for trauma, couple and family therapy, and ACT. Research shows the quality of the relationship with the therapist matters as much as the method: feel free to change practitioner if it does not click after a few sessions.
A focused CBT course often runs eight to twenty sessions; deeper exploratory therapy may extend over months or years, usually once a week. The psychologist sets goals at the start and reviews progress regularly. You can stop whenever you wish; it is useful to discuss it with the practitioner rather than stopping without notice.
