Set where the Jezreel Valley meets the Jordan Valley, some thirty kilometres south of the Sea of Galilee and a short drive from the border crossing into Jordan, Beit Shean lies below sea level and has one of the hottest climates in the country. The modern town took shape as a development town in the 1950s with immigrants from North Africa, built right beside the Roman and Byzantine ruins of Scythopolis, now a national park covering the northern flank of the centre. Route 90 along the Jordan Valley and Route 71 toward Afula cross here, and since 2016 the Valley Railway has ended at a station on the western side of town, linked to the centre by bus. Residential streets cluster around the main avenue and the bus station. For an appointment, get off the train and continue by bus or taxi into the centre, and bring water: summer heat is punishing from early morning.
