A walled Old City, a working fishing harbour and a UNESCO World Heritage listing granted in 2001 make Akko (Acre) one of the most visited spots on the Western Galilee coast, roughly twenty kilometres north of Haifa. Trains on the coastal line (Nahariya, Haifa, Tel Aviv) stop at a station in the modern town, east of the fortifications, and Highway 4 skirts the city. Jews and Arabs live side by side: the Arab community is concentrated inside the walls, while the newer districts spread north and east, including areas settled by immigrants from the former Soviet Union. The Bahá'í gardens at Bahji lie just beyond the northern edge. Before an appointment, check which part of town it is in: the Old City lanes are pedestrian or barely wide enough for a car, so use the car parks outside the ramparts, whereas the modern city is easy to reach by car or local bus.
