Karmiel was drawn on a planner's board in 1964 as a development town in the Beit HaKerem valley of the Galilee and became a city in 1984. Its neighbourhoods (Givat Ram, Ramat Rabin, Makosh and others) climb the slopes in tiers, separated by parks and boulevards, with the Arab villages of Deir al-Asad, Majd al-Krum and Bi'ina forming the backdrop. The immigration wave of the 1990s made Russian a language heard everywhere in town; there is also an established community of Ethiopian immigrants. Since 2017 the train comes straight in: Karmiel station is the terminus of the line from Akko and Haifa. By road, Route 85 links the city with Akko to the west and the Sea of Galilee to the east. Practical tip: the station lies on the eastern side, and city buses or a taxi reach the residential neighbourhoods within minutes.
