About Tiberias

Founded around 20 CE by Herod Antipas on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, some 200 m below sea level, Tiberias is one of Judaism's four holy cities and a tourism hub of northern Israel. The city rises in three tiers: the lakefront with the old town, the promenade and the shopping streets; the pre-1948 districts such as Kiryat Shmuel; and Upper Tiberias, built after statehood up to 240 m above sea level. The Hamat Tiberias hot springs border the south, the tomb of Maimonides draws pilgrims, and Hasidic communities (Karlin, Sanz) have settled here since the 2010s. No train yet: the central bus station in the south of the lower town handles lines from Haifa, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Afula and Safed, while drivers come in on Route 77 from the west or Route 90 along the lake. Allow for the climb between the levels: an appointment in Upper Tiberias is not within walking distance of the promenade.
