Climbing the hills of the Lower Galilee, Nazareth is the largest Arab city in Israel and a Christian pilgrimage centre known worldwide for the Basilica of the Annunciation. The old town, with its market and stepped lanes, fills the hollow of the basin, while newer quarters spread up the ridges; Nof HaGalil, a separate municipality, overlooks it from the east. Most residents are Muslim, alongside a large Christian community of several denominations. Access is by Route 75 from Haifa, Route 79 from the coast or Route 60 from Afula; there is no railway, so the city relies on its central bus station on Paulus VI Street, with services to Haifa, Tel Aviv and the Galilee villages. Traffic is heavy and the slopes are steep. For an appointment, leave the car along one of the main roads and finish on foot, because parking inside the old town is close to impossible.
