An ancient hilltop village whose squared stone blocks were reused in later houses is the origin of Tamra, a Muslim Arab city of the Lower Galilee, 5 km north of Shefa-Amr and some 20 km east of Acre. In the early 18th century it ranked among the leading cotton-growing villages of the region; today the farmland around it is cut by Highway 70, the main approach road, which passes west of the historic core beside the ruin of Khirbet et-Tira. The town expanded rapidly after 1948, when families displaced from nearby villages settled alongside the long-established clans. Practical tip: the old centre climbs steeply and its alleys are narrow, so park on the lower roads and walk up, or arrange to meet in the newer districts, which are easier to reach.
