Since 1963 two places have shared a single municipality: Maalot, a development town created in 1957 to house newcomers, and Tarshiha, a much older Arab village. Together they form an Upper Galilee town about twenty kilometres east of Nahariya, reached by Route 89 as it climbs from the coast toward Safed; no railway comes this far and buses mostly run from Nahariya. The ground is rugged, each half occupying its own hillside, with Monfort Lake, built in the hollow between them, serving as both link and promenade. On the Maalot side, families from North Africa and Romania were later joined by immigrants from the former Soviet Union; on the Tarshiha side, Christians and Muslims live together. Before an appointment, check which of the two parts holds the address, since the walk between Maalot and Tarshiha involves a steep climb.
