About Safed

At nearly 900 metres above sea level, Safed is the highest city in the country, and the terrain dictates everything: stepped alleys, an old town clinging to the mountainside, cold winters, occasional snow. A centre of Kabbalah in the sixteenth century, it keeps the synagogues of the Ari, Caro and Abuhav, and the artists' quarter in the former Arab quarter. Its people combine a strong Haredi presence, well-rooted English-speaking immigrants and long-standing Galilee families. Beyond the old core the town stretches south (Darom) and north-east onto Mount Canaan. No trains reach Safed: Karmiel and Acre are the nearest stations; buses from Haifa, Tiberias and Tel Aviv arrive at the central bus station. Route 89 links Acre to Rosh Pina through the city. For an appointment, park outside the old town (the alleys are closed to vehicles and steep) and bring an extra layer in winter.
