A boulevard of eucalyptus trees along the Ga'aton stream runs straight through Nahariya; Sderot HaGa'aton is the spine of Israel's northernmost coastal city, some ten kilometres from the Lebanese border. German Jewish immigrants founded it in 1935, and it keeps a regular grid and a seaside tradition, with beaches and a promenade at the end of the boulevard. Trains end here: Nahariya station is the terminus of the coastal line from Tel Aviv and Haifa, a stone's throw from the centre; Highway 4 and, inland, Route 89 complete the picture, and buses fan out across the western Galilee. Residential quarters such as Ein Sara stretch east and south, and later arrivals, including Russian speakers in the 1990s, joined the descendants of the founders. For an appointment, arrive by rail if you can: most central addresses are within a short walk of the station.
