A psychiatrist is a medical doctor specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders and psychiatric illness. Unlike a psychologist, a psychiatrist can prescribe medication (antidepressants, anxiolytics, mood stabilizers) and combine a biological approach with psychotherapy. Psychiatrists manage conditions ranging from depression and anxiety to bipolar, psychotic, and substance-use disorders.
