A textile mill gave this Haifa Bay town both its name and its growth: Kfar Ata, set up in 1925 in the Zebulun valley around the Ata factory, became Kiryat Ata and was declared a city in 1969. It is the easternmost of the Krayot, the ring of towns north-east of Haifa, and the only one without a shoreline. Drivers arrive on Route 4, on Route 70 from the Galilee, or on Highway 22, which bypasses the Krayot. Kiryat Ata has no railway station of its own; Kiryat Motzkin and Kiryat Haim on the coastal line are the nearest, with frequent buses for the last stretch. The town has expanded east and north into newer neighbourhoods such as Givat Tal, where the streets are wider than in the old centre. Practical tip: the older streets around the centre are narrow, so aim for a public car park, or park in the newer neighbourhoods if that is where the practice is.
