A naturopath is a practitioner who uses natural approaches to support health and wellbeing, drawing on principles from traditional medicine and lifestyle optimization. In most countries, including the UK, Israel, and France, naturopathy is not a regulated medical profession, and naturopaths cannot diagnose diseases or prescribe medications. A naturopath's role is complementary to conventional medicine, never a replacement.
Naturopathy has no state-recognised qualification in the UK, France, or Israel. Check for training from reputable schools and membership in professional organizations (e.g. RGNC in UK, FENAHMAN/OMNES in France). In Israel, naturopathy is not an official profession: always consult a doctor for diagnosis. Practitioners should not claim medical credentials or present themselves as doctors or healers.
What the profession can do
What it cannot treat
General practitioner (MD)
A doctor receives university medical training, can diagnose diseases, prescribe medications, and provide medical treatment. A naturopath cannot perform these medical acts. They can work together: the doctor provides diagnosis and treatment, the naturopath adds lifestyle support.
Registered dietitian
A dietitian is a regulated healthcare professional with university training in clinical nutrition. They can adapt diets for medical conditions (diabetes, allergies, etc.). A naturopath offers general healthy eating advice without specialized clinical nutrition training.
Traditional Chinese Medicine or Ayurvedic practitioner
These practitioners follow ancient, structured health systems with specific principles (energy meridians, doshas). Naturopaths draw from multiple traditions without a unified theoretical framework. Their training, philosophy, and methods differ substantially.
