About Rehovot

Herzl Street, a long north-south artery, is the backbone of Rehovot, a First Aliyah moshava founded in 1890 by Jews from Poland about 20 km south of Tel Aviv, in what used to be citrus country. The city is first of all a place of science: the Weizmann Institute and the Hebrew University's Faculty of Agriculture are both based here, drawing students and researchers from around the world. The historic Sha'arayim quarter, founded by Yemenite Jews early in the twentieth century, keeps a strong identity of its own, while the newer Rehovot HaHadasha district gathers recent construction. Drivers come in on Highway 40 or Road 412, and Rehovot railway station, with direct trains to Tel Aviv, sits on the edge of town away from Herzl. For an appointment, count on a bus or taxi from the station, and expect daytime parking around Herzl to be hard to find.
