A music therapist uses music and its elements (rhythm, melody, harmony) as therapeutic tools to improve physical, emotional and psychological wellbeing. This profession combines knowledge of musicology, psychology and healthcare sciences. Music therapy is recognized by the World Health Organization and is used in hospital, psychiatric, geriatric and educational settings.
In the UK/US, verify a recognized degree in music therapy (typically a master's level qualification accredited by professional bodies such as BACP, RMT, or AAMT). In Israel, there is no mandatory state diploma; ensure the practitioner has completed accredited training (minimum 1,000–2,000 hours) from organizations like the Israeli Music Therapy Association or institutions recognized by the Ministry of Health.
What the profession can do
What it cannot treat
Clinical psychologist
The psychologist uses speech and analysis to explore psychological processes, while the music therapist uses music as the primary mediator. The music therapist does not diagnose psychiatric conditions and does not practice structured verbal psychotherapy.
Physiotherapist
The physiotherapist primarily retrains motor function through physical exercise; the music therapist uses music to stimulate movement, cognition and emotion. Their approaches can complement each other but are distinct.
Mental health nurse
The nurse provides direct care and daily clinical monitoring; the music therapist intervenes more selectively through musical mediation, without nursing follow-up responsibilities.
