Halfway between Tel Aviv and Haifa, Hadera is where the northern coastal plain begins. Founded in 1891 on marshland drained with eucalyptus trees, the city now stretches from the forest that bears its name to the sea, where the chimneys of the Orot Rabin power station mark the skyline. Rail is the easiest way in: Hadera West station sits on the coastal line with frequent trains in both directions. By car, Highway 2 and Route 4 pass right by, and Route 65 heads inland towards Afula and the Galilee. The neighbourhoods differ widely: Givat Olga faces the beach, Beit Eliezer lies to the east, Ein HaYam is among the newest. Hadera has sizeable communities of immigrants from Ethiopia and the former Soviet Union. Practical tip: the station is some way from the centre, so plan a bus or taxi to reach the neighbourhood of your appointment.
