A gastroenterologist is a medical specialist trained to diagnose and treat diseases of the digestive system, including the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, liver, pancreas, and bile ducts. They use endoscopy and imaging techniques to examine and treat gastrointestinal disorders. They also play a key role in colorectal cancer prevention and management of chronic conditions such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
Verification should include: medical degree followed by specialised training in gastroenterology (typically 4–5 years in Europe). Check registration with the national medical regulator and completion of endoscopy certification. In Israel: medical degree + recognised gastroenterology specialisation by the Israeli Ministry of Health and the Israel Medical Association.
What the profession can do
What it cannot treat
Hepatologist
A hepatologist specialises exclusively in diseases of the liver, pancreas, and bile ducts with additional focused training. A gastroenterologist covers the entire digestive tract. Some gastroenterologists pursue additional hepatology training.
General Practitioner
A GP can diagnose and treat simple gastrointestinal disorders. A gastroenterologist has specialist training and equipment for complex diagnoses and advanced endoscopic procedures.
Visceral/Colorectal Surgeon
A visceral surgeon treats digestive pathology by surgical intervention. A gastroenterologist prioritises medical and minimally invasive endoscopic approaches before considering surgery.
