About Haifa

Haifa runs down from Mount Carmel to the port and reads in three tiers: the lower city with its harbour, Hadar halfway up, and the Carmel on top. The gradient is not a detail when booking an appointment: the Carmelit funicular and the buses link the tiers, but a trip between two of them takes longer than the map suggests. It is a mixed city where Jews and Arabs live side by side, and a student city, with the Technion and the university up on the ridge.

The care landscape in Haifa

Haifa is a major hospital hub for the north of the country. It hosts Rambam Health Care Campus, the largest in the area, along with Bnai Zion, Carmel (Lady Davis), the private Elisha Hospital and Horev. In practice, someone living in northern Israel is often referred to Haifa for whatever their local hospital cannot handle. Everyday care starts with one of the four health funds (Clalit, Maccabi, Meuhedet, Leumit).
