Ashdod is Israel's main port and an entirely modern city: founded in the 1950s and built to a plan, in numbered quarters, which makes finding your way surprisingly simple for a city of this size. It sits on the coastal railway line. Large French-speaking and Russian-speaking communities settled here through the major waves of immigration, and being seen in your own language is not unusual.
Ashdod went without a hospital for a long time; Assuta Ashdod Medical Center filled that gap and now serves the city and the southern coastal plain. For some treatments, patients are still referred to Barzilai in Ashkelon or to the Gush Dan centres. Everyday care runs through one of the four health funds (Clalit, Maccabi, Meuhedet, Leumit).
