A urologist is a surgeon specialising in the urinary tract and male reproductive system. They diagnose and treat urinary tract infections, kidney stones, prostate disorders, male infertility, and urogenital cancers. Urologists combine medical management with surgical interventions, including minimally invasive endoscopic and laparoscopic techniques.
Medical degree from a recognised institution + specialisation in urology (minimum 5-6 years training in the UK/US, 5-6 years in Israel). In Israel, verify registration with the Israeli Ministry of Health and the Medical Association. Internationally, check board certification (American Board of Urology, Royal College of Surgeons, equivalent bodies) and medical license.
What the profession can do
What it cannot treat
Nephrologist
Nephrologists manage medical kidney diseases (renal hypertension, chronic kidney disease, glomerulonephritis). Urologists manage surgical issues and lower urinary tract disease. They often collaborate for complex cases.
Gynaecologist
Gynaecologists specialise in the female reproductive system. Urologists focus on the urinary tract and male reproductive organs, though some patients may require joint care for urogenital disorders.
General Practitioner
GPs perform initial diagnosis and may treat simple urinary infections. Urologists intervene in complex, recurrent cases, or those requiring surgical management.
