The springs of the Yarkon rise at the foot of Rosh HaAyin (the name means head of the spring), and Tel Afek national park, with its Ottoman fortress and the ruins of Antipatris, lies at its western gate. Immigrants from Yemen, flown in by Operation Magic Carpet, settled it in 1949-1950 in a former British army camp; that Yemenite heritage still shows in local music, synagogues and food. A city since 1994, it changed scale in the 2010s with large new neighbourhoods on the eastern hills, drawing young families from across the centre. Rosh HaAyin lies east of Petah Tikva at the meeting point of Highway 5 and Highway 6, with Road 444 running alongside. Rosh HaAyin North station, on the line to Tel Aviv, is located at the northern end. For an appointment, check whether you are headed to the old town near the springs or to the new hillside districts: several kilometres separate them.
