A shiatsu therapist is a practitioner trained in a Japanese manual therapy technique based on finger and palm pressure applied to specific energy points and pathways throughout the body. The practice draws from traditional Chinese medicine and aims to restore energetic balance and promote well-being. Shiatsu does not diagnose medical conditions and is not a substitute for medical care. In most countries, including the UK and US, shiatsu is not regulated by law and practitioners do not hold protected professional titles.
Shiatsu is not a regulated profession in the UK, US, or most countries. Verify that the practitioner has completed a recognised training programme of at least 500-1000 hours from an established school (BSRA, ICTA, or equivalent). Ask for evidence of continuous professional development and membership in a professional association. In Israel, shiatsu has no legal status or protected title; always request qualifications and years of practice experience.
What the profession can do
What it cannot treat
Physiotherapist (Physical Therapist)
Physiotherapists are regulated health professionals with state-recognised qualifications who treat musculo-skeletal disorders using scientifically validated techniques and specific diagnoses. Shiatsu practitioners do not claim to treat pathology but rather promote energetic balance. Physiotherapy is based on anatomical diagnosis; shiatsu operates within an energetic framework without medical diagnosis.
Chiropractor
Chiropractors focus on spinal manipulation and skeletal adjustment to treat structural pain conditions. Shiatsu uses finger and palm pressure on energy points without forceful joint manipulation. Chiropractors work with mechanical diagnoses; shiatsu therapists apply traditional energy-based theories.
Acupuncturist
Acupuncturists work on the same energy points and pathways as shiatsu practitioners but use fine needles rather than manual pressure. Both draw from traditional Chinese medicine, but shiatsu is non-invasive and entirely hands-on. Training, licensing, and regulation differ significantly between the two practices.
Massage Therapist
Massage therapists use various hands-on techniques (Swedish, deep tissue, sports massage) focused on muscle and soft tissue manipulation to reduce tension and improve function. Shiatsu is specifically based on energy-point work derived from traditional Chinese medicine. Massage is often more widely regulated and evidence-based than shiatsu.
