A radiologist is a physician who specialises in medical imaging: X-rays, ultrasound, CT scans, MRI and mammography. The imaging specialist's core job is reading pictures and writing a report for the doctor who ordered the test, which is why many patients never actually meet them. Some are interventional radiologists who treat under image guidance: guided biopsies, drainage, joint injections, opening a blocked artery through a tiny puncture. In Israel, you usually arrive with a referral (הפניה) from your family doctor or a specialist in your health fund (קופת חולים), and the scan is done in a hospital or an imaging institute (מכון דימות). On the day, a radiographer typically positions you and acquires the images; the radiology doctor steps in for ultrasound, guided procedures and the final interpretation.
In Israel, 'radiologist' is a specialist title (תעודת מומחה ברדיולוגיה אבחנתית) granted after a medical degree, a Ministry of Health licence to practise medicine (רישיון לעסוק ברפואה) and a multi-year residency validated by the Scientific Council of the Israel Medical Association (המועצה המדעית של ההסתדרות הרפואית). Both the licence and the specialty can be checked for free on the Ministry of Health public register of licence holders (מאגר בעלי רישיון) and its specialist roll. A degree earned abroad, including in Europe or North America, gives no right to practise until the doctor holds the Israeli licence (most foreign graduates must pass the national licensing exam); recognition of a foreign specialist title goes through a file reviewed by the Scientific Council, sometimes with an additional exam. Do not confuse the radiologist with the radiographer (טכנאי רנטגן), an allied health professional who takes the images but does not sign a diagnostic report, nor with a family doctor or gynaecologist who performs office ultrasound. Imaging institutes themselves need a Ministry permit for radiation-emitting equipment. Compared with the UK or France, the pathway has a different name and structure but a comparable level of demand.
What the profession can do
What it cannot treat
Radiographer (טכנאי רנטגן)
The radiographer is an allied health professional trained to position you, set the machine and obtain good-quality images. They do not make diagnoses or sign reports. They are the person you meet during the scan, whereas the radiologist interprets the images afterwards.
Nuclear medicine physician (רפואה גרעינית)
Nuclear medicine uses an injected radioactive tracer (bone scan, PET-CT) to show how an organ works rather than what it looks like. It is a separate specialty with its own residency, although the two fields collaborate closely in cancer care.
Radiation oncologist
The radiation oncologist uses radiation to treat cancer, not to diagnose it. The radiologist supplies the images used to plan and monitor that treatment but does not deliver radiotherapy.
Gynaecologist or family doctor doing ultrasound
Many gynaecologists and some family doctors perform targeted ultrasound in their own consultation. The radiologist covers the whole range of imaging techniques and handles complex studies or cases that need a second expert look.
