Leo Motzkin, the Zionist leader, gave his name to this town founded in 1934 as a workers' settlement on the shore of Haifa Bay. Today Kiryat Motzkin is one of the Krayot, the ring of municipalities just north of Haifa, wedged between Kiryat Yam on the seaward side and Kiryat Bialik inland, with Kiryat Haim to the south. Getting there is simple: the Kiryat Motzkin railway station sits on the coastal line between Haifa and Nahariya, Highway 4 (the Haifa to Acre road) runs straight through, and the Metronit bus rapid transit serves the Krayot. The place has long been described as a garden suburb, with low-rise housing and tree-lined streets; a large share of its population arrived from the former Soviet Union during the 1990s. Practical tip: come by train and walk or hop on a local bus from the station, since kerbside parking along Highway 4 fills up quickly in the morning.
