A podiatrist is a healthcare professional specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of foot and ankle conditions. They address dermatological problems (corns, calluses, thick nails), plantar pain, deformities (bunions, hammer toes), and gait disturbances. Podiatrists can prescribe custom orthopaedic insoles and provide preventive advice to maintain foot health.
Check for a qualified diploma in podiatry (3-4 years post-secondary education) from an accredited institution. In Israel, verify registration with the Ministry of Health and professional licensing bodies (פודיאטרים). Title variations include 'Podiatrist' (North America, UK, Israel/English), 'Podologue' (France, French-speaking regions). Beware: 'reflexologist' is not the same as a qualified podiatrist.
What the profession can do
What it cannot treat
Physiotherapist (Physical Therapist)
Physiotherapists rehabilitate muscles and joints through exercise and manual therapy, while podiatrists focus on foot conditions and orthopaedic correction. They often work together: the podiatrist prescribes an insole, the physiotherapist ensures functional adaptation.
Orthopaedic Surgeon
Orthopaedic surgeons operate on deformities and serious bone injuries, whereas podiatrists provide conservative treatment. A podiatrist may prepare a patient before or after orthopaedic foot surgery.
Dermatologist
Dermatologists treat skin diseases (psoriasis, eczema, fungal infections) including those affecting the feet, while podiatrists address foot conditions holistically (structure, function, gait). Collaboration may be needed for complex cases.
General Practitioner
General practitioners diagnose and refer to specialists, while podiatrists provide in-depth expertise in foot care and treatment. For foot pain of unknown origin, consult your GP first for triage.
