Periodontist

A periodontist is a dentist who specialises in the tissues that hold teeth in place: the gums, the jawbone and the ligament that connects them. People also say gum specialist or, in Israel, מומחה לחניכיים. This is the person who treats periodontitis, the chronic inflammation that makes gums bleed, loosens teeth and eventually causes tooth loss if left untreated. Periodontists also place dental implants and rebuild gum or bone that has been lost. A first consultation includes probing around every tooth (measuring the depth of the pockets at the gum line), X-rays, a review of risk factors (smoking, diabetes) and a treatment plan in several stages, almost always starting with a deep cleaning under local anaesthesia.

In Israel, periodontics (פריודונטיה) is one of the dental specialties officially recognised by the Ministry of Health, and the title of specialist in periodontics (מומחה בפריודונטיה) is protected. To obtain it, a licensed dentist (רישיון לעסוק ברפואת שיניים) completes a three-year residency in an accredited university department (Jerusalem or Tel Aviv), then passes the specialty examinations before the Scientific Council of the Israel Dental Association (ההסתדרות לרפואת שיניים). The certificate is issued by the Ministry and appears in the public dental registry (פנקס רופאי השיניים), which can be searched online: look up the name and check that the entry says specialist in periodontics. Many general dentists offer gum treatment and implants without being specialists; this is legal, but they may not call themselves מומחה. A specialist trained abroad (France, the United States, Argentina) must have the specialty recognised by the Ministry, which may require an exam or a supplementary period. In the UK, periodontics is a GDC-registered specialty with a similar three-year training, so the Israeli framework will feel familiar; in France the specialty was only formalised in 2011 and is often practised by general dentists with a university diploma. For implants, ask who places the implant and who makes the crown, as these are sometimes two different practitioners.
