A pediatrician is a medical doctor trained to diagnose, treat, and prevent illnesses in children and adolescents from birth to 18 years of age. Pediatricians provide comprehensive health supervision, including regular health examinations, vaccinations, developmental screening, and guidance to parents on child health and safety. They manage acute and chronic diseases in children and serve as the child's primary medical advocate, ensuring holistic care tailored to each developmental stage.
Verify that your pediatrician holds a medical degree (MD or equivalent) and has completed specialized training in pediatrics, typically a 3-year residency recognized by the relevant medical board. In Israel, the professional should be registered with the Israeli Medical Association (Histadrut Rofe'im) with certification in pediatrics from the Ministry of Health. In Europe and North America, check for board certification (e.g., American Board of Pediatrics, European Board qualification). Additional subspecialty certifications (e.g., pediatric intensive care, neonatology) may also be verified.
What the profession can do
What it cannot treat
General Practitioner / Family Medicine Physician
A pediatrician specializes exclusively in pediatric medicine and has in-depth training in child growth, development, and childhood diseases. A general practitioner provides primary care to patients of all ages with more general medical knowledge. In Israel, Europe, and North America, children typically receive specialized pediatric care through a dedicated pediatrician.
Pediatric Subspecialist (Neonatology, Pediatric Cardiology, etc.)
A general pediatrician provides comprehensive care for healthy and mildly to moderately ill children across all systems. A pediatric subspecialist focuses on a specific organ system or patient population (e.g., newborns, heart disease) and manages complex cases within that subspecialty, often working collaboratively with the primary care pediatrician.
Child Psychiatrist (Pédopsychiatre)
A child psychiatrist specializes in mental health and psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents, including diagnostic assessment and medication management. A general pediatrician addresses mental health from a holistic perspective but refers to a child psychiatrist for significant emotional or behavioral disorders.
Pediatric Nurse / Midwife
Pediatric nurses and midwives provide nursing care, health education, and support to children and newborns under medical supervision. Pediatricians diagnose illnesses, prescribe medications, perform medical procedures, and provide overall medical direction and coordination of care.
A pediatrician follows a child from birth through adolescence, in practice up to eighteen in Israel. The first months are paced by check-ups (weight, development, vaccines); later, the pediatrician sees common illnesses, check-ups and questions about growth, sleep, feeding and behaviour. Within the health funds, the pediatrician acts as the child's family doctor.
For a fast appointment when the child is ill, a longer consultation, a home visit, or to be seen in English or French. Families who recently made aliyah, tourists and parents who want a second opinion are the main cases. Vaccines and developmental check-ups remain free through the Tipat Halav centres and the health fund.
Fees depend on the practitioner, the city, the length and the setting (clinic, home, video). On RofeBeClick the price is shown on each profile before you book, with no service fee. Home visits and evening or weekend consultations are generally more expensive.
Pediatric consultations are free in your health fund. For a private pediatrician, supplementary plans sometimes reimburse part of specialist consultations under their conditions; private and expatriate insurance often reimburses against an invoice. Check before the visit and keep the invoice.
Yes, some pediatricians offer home visits, especially for infants, fever and stomach bugs, to avoid the waiting room. The consultation mode is stated on the practitioner's profile and the RofeBeClick search can filter for home visits.
Spoken languages are listed on every profile and the pediatrician page is broken down by city. The search has a language filter. For parents, being able to describe their child's symptoms and understand the instructions in their own language is often the first criterion.
Fever in an infant under three months, difficulty breathing, blue lips, unusual drowsiness or a child who cannot be woken, seizures, dehydration (no urine for several hours), a purple rash that does not fade under pressure, a fall with loss of consciousness: call 101 or go to the pediatric emergency room. For moderate fever in a child who drinks and plays, an ear infection, a sore throat or a common rash, the pediatrician is the right place.
Vaccines on the Israeli schedule are given free of charge at Tipat Halav centres (ages 0 to 6) and then at school. A private pediatrician can review the record of a child born abroad, map it to the Israeli schedule and advise on catch-up doses; some vaccines can also be given in the clinic. Bring the original vaccination record.
