An otolaryngologist (ENT specialist) is a physician who diagnoses and treats diseases of the ear, nose, throat, and related structures of the neck and head. They manage both acute infections and chronic conditions, offering either medical or surgical treatment. This specialty covers audiology, balance disorders, and voice pathology. In Israel, qualified ENT doctors must be registered with the Israeli Medical Council and licensed by the Ministry of Health.
Medical degree (MD or equivalent) plus 4–5 years of postgraduate specialization in otolaryngology. In Israel, verify registration with the Israeli Medical Council and accreditation by the State Health Ministry. In the US/UK, check board certification (ABOS in US, FRCS in UK). Some ENT doctors hold additional certificates in otology, rhinology, head-and-neck oncology, or endoscopic sinus surgery.
What the profession can do
What it cannot treat
Allergist/Immunologist
An allergist diagnoses and treats allergic reactions; an ENT manages the nasal and sinus consequences of allergies. Both may collaborate on chronic allergic rhinitis, but the allergist addresses the underlying allergic mechanism.
Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP)
An SLP specializes in voice, swallowing, and communication disorders and provides therapy; the ENT diagnoses structural causes and prescribes treatment. They work together on voice and dysphagia cases.
Audiologist
An audiologist (often non-physician) is expert in hearing tests and hearing device fitting. The ENT diagnoses the cause of hearing loss and prescribes management; the audiologist performs detailed testing and device adjustment.
Primary Care Physician
The primary care doctor treats minor, self-limited ENT problems (common cold, mild sore throat). The ENT is consulted for recurrent, complex, or surgical conditions, and to diagnose concerning findings.
Maxillofacial Surgeon
A maxillofacial surgeon focuses on the jaws, teeth, and facial reconstruction. The ENT manages the throat, sinuses, and ear. Collaboration is needed for salivary gland disease and congenital head-and-neck anomalies.
