Beit Shemesh railway station, on the old Jaffa to Jerusalem line, is still the easiest way into this town on the lower slopes of the Judean Hills, about thirty kilometres west of Jerusalem. Founded in 1950 as a development town, it grew sharply from the 1990s with Ramat Beit Shemesh (sections Aleph, Bet, Gimel and Dalet) on the hills to the south, now large Haredi neighbourhoods, while the original town, Givat Sharett and Sheinfeld keep a more mixed population. English-speaking immigrants form a sizeable community, mainly in Ramat Beit Shemesh Aleph. Route 38 runs north to south through the city and connects it to Route 1 toward Jerusalem and Tel Aviv; city buses link the station with the hilltops. Before an appointment, check whether it is in the lower town or in Ramat Beit Shemesh: a steep climb separates the two, and Route 38 is busy during office hours.
