Rahat is the largest Bedouin locality in Israel and the only one with city status, granted in 1994. Founded by the state in 1972 to settle Negev tribes in a permanent town, it has a strikingly young population. It lies some 20 km north of Beersheba beside Highway 40, the road toward Kiryat Gat and the centre of the country; Route 31 starts here and heads east toward Arad. The city is divided into numbered neighbourhoods, each generally home to one tribe or extended family, so a neighbourhood number often says more than a street name. The Idan HaNegev industrial park, shared with neighbouring councils, sits on its edge. Since 2007 the Lehavim-Rahat station on the Beersheba line has served the city from a few kilometres to the south-east, with a bus or taxi for the final leg. For an appointment, ask for the neighbourhood number and a landmark, and come by car if you can.
