The westernmost of the Krayot, the chain of suburbs north of Haifa, Kiryat Yam is the only one with a beach and a seafront promenade. Settlers moved in during 1941 on land bought in the 1930s, and the municipality became a city in 1976. The layout is easy to read: lettered neighbourhoods (Aleph, Bet, Gimel, Dalet) laid out behind the shoreline, Kiryat Motzkin at its back and Kiryat Haim to the south. No railway halt exists inside the town, but Kiryat Motzkin station on the coastal line is a short ride away, Haifa metropolitan buses run along the main streets, and Highway 4 passes just to the east. Russian speakers who arrived in the 1990s make up a notable part of the population. For an appointment, the smoothest route is the train to Kiryat Motzkin and then a bus or taxi; on summer Fridays, stay away from the seafront streets if you need a parking spot.
