An occupational therapist is a healthcare professional who helps people with physical, mental, or sensory disabilities develop, recover, or maintain the skills needed to perform activities of daily living (self-care, dressing, work, leisure). They work with children, adults, and older people using therapeutic activities and environmental adaptations. Occupational therapy follows a holistic approach aimed at promoting independence, quality of life, and social inclusion.
In most countries, verify that the occupational therapist holds a recognized entry-level degree (typically 3–4 years of university education) and is registered with the national regulatory body (HCPC in the UK, NBCOT/AOTA in the US, CAOT in Canada). In Israel, check for Ministry of Health recognition and membership in the Israeli Occupational Therapists Association. Always request proof of formal academic credentials, not just short-term certifications.
What the profession can do
What it cannot treat
Physiotherapist (Physical Therapist)
Physiotherapists focus narrowly on improving movement, strength, and joint mobility through exercise and manual techniques. Occupational therapists take a broader view—addressing how to perform meaningful activities like cooking, working, or self-care despite limitations. Both may be involved in the same rehabilitation pathway but with different emphases.
Psychologist
Psychologists assess and treat emotional, behavioral, and mental disorders through psychotherapy and psychological interventions. Occupational therapists focus on functional capacity and independence in daily activities, often linked to physical or cognitive impairment. They may collaborate when mental health affects occupational engagement.
Social Worker
Social workers connect people to resources (benefits, housing, support services) and facilitate social integration. Occupational therapists assess and remediate functional abilities and modify the physical environment. Both are essential for holistic rehabilitation and social reintegration.
