The name translates as "City of Angels": Kiryat Malakhi was named in honour of the Jewish community of Los Angeles, which supported its early years. It began in 1951 as a transit camp for new immigrants, grew into a development town and was declared a city in 1998. It sits in the southern plain about fifteen kilometres east of Ashdod, at the meeting of Routes 3 and 40 (Malakhi Junction), between Ashdod, Kiryat Gat and Ashkelon. Many residents are immigrants from Ethiopia or the former Soviet Union, and the town has stayed small enough that the centre can be crossed on foot. No train stops here; Ashdod Ad Halom and Kiryat Gat are the nearest stations, and intercity buses serve the local bus terminal. Practical tip: by car, Malakhi Junction is quick outside rush hour, and parking in town is easy.
