A homeopath is a practitioner who uses extremely diluted substances to stimulate the body's natural healing mechanisms, following homeopathic principles. This approach is based on the concept of 'like cures like': a substance causing certain symptoms in a healthy person may treat similar symptoms in a sick person. While widely used in Europe, particularly in France and Switzerland, homeopathy is classified as complementary and alternative medicine by major international health authorities and lacks robust scientific evidence for most conditions.
In France: verify registration with a professional body and training credentials (university diploma or accredited private training). In Belgium and Switzerland: check national certifications. In Israel: homeopathy is not regulated as a medical profession; practitioners must not present themselves as doctors and must clearly display their non-medical status. There is no official recognition from the Israeli Ministry of Health.
What the profession can do
What it cannot treat
General Practitioner (GP)
A GP can diagnose, prescribe allopathic medications, order tests, and manage emergencies. A homeopath uses an entirely different approach based on dilution and has no recognised medical training. A doctor may practise homeopathy alongside conventional medicine, but this remains scientifically controversial.
Phytotherapist
A phytotherapist uses whole plants or their extracts at therapeutic doses with measurable active principles. A homeopath uses extreme dilutions where theoretically no active molecules remain. Phytotherapy has a more solid research base, though not always sufficient.
Naturopath
A naturopath encourages natural approaches (diet, herbs, exercise) without necessarily using homeopathy. A homeopath specifically focuses on highly diluted homeopathic remedies. Both are unregulated practitioners but with different methods and philosophies.
Pharmacist
A pharmacist is a trained and regulated professional able to dispense medications and advise on drug interactions. They may sell homeopathic remedies but do not prescribe them according to homeopathic logic. The pharmacist has medical and pharmacological competence that the homeopath does not possess.
