Founded in 1956 as a development town in the western Negev, Netivot lies between Beersheba and the Gaza Strip, with Sderot and Ofakim as its closest neighbours. Its first residents came mainly from Morocco and Tunisia; immigrants from Ethiopia and the former Soviet Union followed, and a large Haredi community has grown steadily since. The town is best known for the tomb of Rabbi Israel Abuhatzeira, the Baba Sali, whose annual hillula on the fourth of Shevat draws crowds of pilgrims and fills the streets for a few days. Netivot railway station, open since 2015 on the Ashkelon-Beersheba line, puts the town within a direct train ride of the centre of the country. By car, Highway 25 crosses the town from the Gaza border area toward Beersheba. Practical advice for an appointment: check the Hebrew calendar first, because around pilgrimage dates parking near the tomb area becomes scarce.
