Perched on the first ridges of the Judean Desert, seven kilometres east of Jerusalem, Maale Adumim overlooks Highway 1 as it drops toward the Dead Sea. Founded in 1975 and granted city status in 1991, it is the most populous Israeli locality in the West Bank. From Jerusalem, cars and city bus lines reach it along the highway past the Mishor Adumim industrial zone; no train serves the area. The town is arranged in terraced neighbourhoods around a centre with a shopping mall and wide boulevards. Mitzpe Nevo, on the ridge, is a religious quarter, whereas the city as a whole leans secular and traditional. Desert light and dry air define the setting all year round. A tip: parking is easy in the residential streets, but if your appointment is in the centre, factor in the uphill walk from the bus stop and carry water in summer.
