A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support to women and their families before, during, and after childbirth. She is not a medical professional and does not provide clinical care. Her role is to enhance wellbeing, reduce anxiety, and advocate for the woman's birth preferences.
Verify that the doula has completed training through a recognized organization such as Dona International, or a nationally accredited body. In the UK and US, look for certification from established doula organizations. In Israel, doulas are not regulated by the Ministry of Health, but many hold international certifications from Dona or similar bodies. Always request references and testimonials from previous clients.
What the profession can do
What it cannot treat
Midwife
A midwife is a regulated healthcare professional who provides medical obstetric and neonatal care, diagnoses complications, and prescribes treatment. A doula offers emotional and informational support with no clinical responsibility. They can work together to support the birthing woman.
Childbirth Educator / Birth Coach
A childbirth educator delivers structured prenatal classes on labour techniques and pain management. A doula provides continuous emotional and physical companionship during labour and postpartum. Their roles are complementary rather than identical.
Psychologist or psychotherapist
A psychologist treats mental health conditions and clinical anxiety through evidence-based therapeutic interventions. A doula offers practical emotional and social support without psychiatric diagnosis or treatment. Severe perinatal anxiety warrants psychological assessment.
