German-Jewish immigrants founded Kiryat Bialik in 1934 and named it after the poet Hayim Nahman Bialik, who had died that year. Their influence shows in the orderly grid of the old centre, with its small houses and tree-lined streets. A city since 1976, it belongs to the Krayot north of Haifa Bay, hemmed in by Kiryat Motzkin, Kiryat Ata and Kiryat Yam. Growth has pushed northwards through Tzur Shalom and Neve Ganim to Afek, a large district of new apartment buildings. Route 4 runs through the Krayot from north to south and Highway 22 bypasses them; trains stop at Kiryat Motzkin, a few hundred metres from the municipal boundary. Practical tip: the historic centre and Afek are further apart than they look on the map, so a bus or taxi from the station saves time.
