Dimona was founded in 1955 as a development town in the Negev, roughly 35 km south-east of Beersheba on Route 25, the road toward the Arava and the Dead Sea; its first settlers were mainly immigrants from North Africa. Passenger trains on the Beersheba to Dimona line resumed in 2005 and stop at a station on the edge of town, while intercity buses to Beersheba, Arad, Eilat and Tel Aviv leave from the central bus station downtown. In the 1960s the African Hebrew Israelite community settled here in its own neighbourhood, later joined by families from the former Soviet Union and Jews from India, an unusual mix for the south. The street plan is open: low-rise residential districts separated by wide avenues, and a single commercial centre. Appointment tip: bring a hat and water in summer, parking is never a problem, and from the railway station you will need a bus or taxi into the centre.
