Hasidim from Warsaw founded Bnei Brak in 1924, and a century later it is the centre of Haredi Judaism in Israel and one of the most crowded cities in the country. It borders Ramat Gan, Petah Tikva and Givat Shmuel, in the middle of Gush Dan, a few kilometres from central Tel Aviv. Rabbi Akiva Street is the commercial spine; around it lie the quarters of the big Hasidic courts (Vizhnitz, Gur) and of Lithuanian yeshivot, including Ponevezh, while Pardes Katz in the north keeps a more varied population. Highway 4 (Geha) runs along the eastern side, the railway station sits on the line toward Hod Hasharon, the Red Line light rail stops on Jabotinsky Road at the Ramat Gan boundary, and buses connect to Jerusalem and the rest of Gush Dan. Come by public transport if you can: streets are narrow, parking is scarce, and from Friday afternoon until Saturday night the city is closed to vehicles.
