Lod is first and foremost a railway junction: its station, among the oldest in the country, is where trains between Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Beersheba and Ashkelon meet, and Ben Gurion Airport lies right next door. The city sits some fifteen kilometres south-east of Tel Aviv beside its twin Ramla, framed by Highway 1, Route 40 and Route 443. Ancient Lydda left an old town around the Church of Saint George and the adjoining mosque; later growth added twentieth-century districts such as the large Ganei Aviv in the north and Ramat Eshkol. Lod is a mixed city where an Arab community lives alongside families from the former Soviet Union and Ethiopia, as well as newer religious groups. For an appointment, take the train: the station is on the edge of the centre, and a bus or taxi reaches the outer neighbourhoods in a few minutes.
