A chiropractor is a healthcare professional specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, particularly of the spine. They use manual techniques called 'adjustments' or 'spinal manipulations' to correct misalignments (subluxations) and reduce pain. Chiropractors focus on the relationship between body structure (especially the spine) and function to improve mobility and alleviate symptoms. Regulation and scope of practice vary significantly by country; in many European countries and France, chiropractic is not a state-regulated medical profession, whereas in North America and some other nations it is formally recognized.
Verify graduation from an accredited chiropractic program (typically 5+ years) recognized by organizations such as the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) in North America or equivalent European bodies. Check national registration with relevant health authorities. In France, there is no official state regulation, so verify credentials through professional associations like the Conseil national de l'ordre des chiropracteurs (CNOC). In Israel, chiropractors must be registered with the Ministry of Health and hold recognized certification from accredited institutions.
What the profession can do
What it cannot treat
Physiotherapist (Physical Therapist)
Physiotherapists are regulated healthcare professionals who treat through movement, exercise, and manual techniques. They typically work under physician referral and are reimbursed by insurance in most countries. Physiotherapists have a broader scope including post-surgical rehabilitation and chronic disease management, whereas chiropractors primarily focus on spinal alignment.
Osteopath
Osteopaths use a holistic approach based on the theory that restrictions in tissue mobility cause dysfunction and pain. While osteopathy emphasizes the interrelationship of all body systems, chiropractic focuses more narrowly on spinal adjustment and vertebral alignment. Regulation and recognition vary by country for both professions.
Medical Doctor (GP, Rheumatologist, or Neurologist)
Physicians can perform full diagnostic workups, order all imaging and laboratory tests, prescribe medications, and diagnose serious underlying diseases. Chiropractors in most countries are limited to functional musculoskeletal assessment and manual therapy, and cannot provide medical diagnosis or pharmaceutical treatment.
