Gedera was founded in 1884 by members of the Bilu movement and remains one of the oldest agricultural settlements in the country, with a handful of stone houses from that period still standing in the old core. It marks the southern end of the central coastal plain: Rehovot lies to the north, Ashdod and the sea to the west, and the moshavim of the Yavne area surround it. Drivers come in on Route 40 via Bilu Junction, or on Route 7, which links to Highway 6. There is no railway station; the usual approach is to get off at Rehovot or Yavne and finish by bus or taxi. Newer neighbourhoods have spread east and south, well away from the historic centre. Practical advice: avoid rush hour if you can, Bilu Junction clogs up in the morning and late afternoon.
