Verified medical information · Sources : Cochrane Collaboration: 'Art therapy for anxiety disorders' (2017) – moderate quality evidence · NHS (National Health Service, UK): Art therapy recommendations for depression and trauma (2023) · American Psychiatric Association: complementary and alternative therapies resource (2022) · PubMed PMID: 28577576 – Meta-analysis of art therapy and anxiety reduction · Art Therapists, Registered (ACAT, UK): professional standards and scope of practice (2023)
An art therapist uses creative processes such as drawing, painting, sculpture, and collage as a therapeutic tool to promote emotional expression and psychological well-being. This approach recognises that artistic creation can facilitate access to difficult emotions that are hard to verbalise and contributes to stress and anxiety reduction. Art therapy is used as a complement to other treatments in various settings including psychiatric hospitals, general hospitals, rehabilitation centres, and private practice.
In the UK and Europe, verify university-recognised training in art therapy (postgraduate diploma or master's degree) or certification from professional bodies such as ACAT (Art Therapists, Registered). Practitioners should have completed theoretical training in psychology and supervised clinical practice (typically 1,000–1,500+ hours). In Israel, the profession is regulated by the Ministry of Health; verify registration with the Israeli Association of Therapists and at least 1,000–1,500 hours of formal training.
What the profession can do
What it cannot treat
Psychotherapist
A psychotherapist primarily uses verbal communication and psychological techniques (psychoanalysis, CBT, etc.) to treat mental disorders. An art therapist uses creative expression as the primary medium and often complements a psychotherapist's work, particularly for patients with verbal communication difficulties.
Psychiatrist
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor trained to diagnose and treat mental illness, including through prescription of medications. An art therapist is not medically qualified, cannot prescribe medications, and works in a complementary role without autonomous diagnostic authority.
Occupational therapist
An occupational therapist focuses on adapting the environment and daily activities to restore functional independence. An art therapist prioritises creative expression and emotional elaboration, although both approaches can be complementary.
