Between Rishon LeZion and Rehovot, on the coastal plain south of Tel Aviv, Ness Ziona traces its origins to 1883, when Reuben Lehrer settled at Wadi Hanin; the village was first called Nahalat Reuben and later took its present name from a verse in the Book of Jeremiah. Granted city status in 1992, it long depended on citrus groves and today hosts a science park on the boundary with Rehovot. Route 42 to the west and Route 412, which crosses the town, carry car traffic, buses link it with Tel Aviv, Rishon LeZion and Rehovot, and with no station of its own, rail passengers alight at Rehovot or Rishon LeZion. The historic core sits next to Tirat Shalom, a former moshav absorbed as a neighbourhood, and to newer housing estates. On the practical side, driving is convenient, residential streets have room to park, and only the main thoroughfare gets congested late in the day.
